Some instinct advised caution about telling Elliot how Abigail had poleaxed Harry Allen and left him out cold the night before. The mention of the wharfinger’s name still sent her husband into a temper.

The drink had got the better of him by the time he got back from the pub, so he didn’t question where she had been. He fell on to the bed, mumbling something about having a night of conjugal passion. Gradually, he subsided into muffled grunts and then snores.

‘Hardly my Romeo,’ she murmured as she eyed the gaping trouser fly and the creased shirt tails. After removing his boots and his cap, she left him as he was. Physical intimacy with someone who stank like a brewery was something she preferred to avoid.

What attracted me to him in the first place? she wondered. He’s not attractive or loving. Security? She nodded silently. Security. It was what every woman had wanted since the beginning of time: security for herself and her children.

Her train of thought led her to consider young Carrie and middle-aged George. And Robbie. Dread circulated like cold air in her stomach.

Nature was a wily affair, enticing the unwary regardless of matrimonial promises and gold rings slid on to willing fingers. A vision of Anthony Wesley came to her mind and it would have stayed there if she hadn’t forced herself to open her eyes and see her world as it was and how it must be. She was a married woman and regardless of her lot, she had made her bed and must lie on it. Carrie too had to be reminded of her commitment and Robbie deserved nothing better than a severe ticking-off and a threat to tell Ma and Pa if need be.

She must go along and see her mother in the morning. She had avoided her father; he didn’t approve of women in pubs and had glowered when he saw her. Thoughtfully, she patted the baby that grew big in her stomach then closed her eyes and slept.
